05-Jun-2017

PADUCAH -- Brandon Kelley had five hits and Nick Shumaker drove in five runs as the Paducah Chiefs topped the Madisonville Miners 11-5 Sunday night at Brooks Stadium.

Kelley led off the game with a single and, after a walk to Christian Dominguez and a hit batter, Dixon Craft followed with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Travis Regalado bunted home another run and the Chiefs had a quick 2-0 lead off Miners starter Conor Crotty.

The Miners got on the board in the second inning, as Ryan Brooks reached on an error, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Chad Hinkle's single.

The Chiefs chased Crotty in the fourth, scoring five times after loading the bases with one out, as Kelley drove in a run on a single, Dominguez was hit by a pitch, forcing home another run, and Schumaker cleared the sacks with a double for a 7-2 lead.

The Miners closed the gap with a four-run fifth, loading the bases on a walk, single and error, before greeting reliever Jacob Sawyers with three straight singles. Sawyers regrouped and fanned Ryan Brooks before retiring Hunter James and Robert Strader on pop outs.

Paducah effectively put the game away in the home fifth, loading the bases on two singles and a walk before Schumaker stroked a two-run single and Craft followed with another safety for a 10-5 lead.

The Chiefs closed the scoring in the seventh, as Kelley singled and went to second on an outfield error, stole third and scored on a throwing error for the final 11-5 margin.

Sawyers (1-0) earned the win with three innings of relief, allowing one run. Bryant Claunch and Craft finished with a shutout inning each. Craft also had three hits and drove in two runs, while Tate Mathis and Spencer Schultz also had a pair of hits in Paducah's 15-hit attack.

Crotty (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs in 3 1/3 innings. Nick Keaton and Billy King each had two hits for the Miners.

The contest was delayed 25 minutes by rain.
