The Owensboro Oilers won in come-from-behind style at home Tuesday night, overcominng the visiting Hoptown Hoppers. The final score was Hoppers 8 to Oilers 11.
Owensboro scored first with two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. However -- to borrow a poetic phrase -- "the outlook wasn't brilliant" all too soon for the home team. Hoptown clean-up hitter Nolen Milton led off the top of the 2nd inning with a solo home run to trigger a four run tally for the visitors. In a case of baseball deja vu all over again, Milton did exactly the same thing to lead off the top of the 3rd inning and the Hoppers put four more runs on the board. After three complete innings Owensboro trailed 8 to 2.
Then back came the Oilers. The home team scored one run each in the bottom of innings 4, 5, and 6 while holding Hoptown in check. At the end of six complete innings the advantage was merely 8 to 5 for the guests. Owensboro took the lead with six runs in the 7th inning -- and having scored 9 unanswered runs -- suddenly led 11 to 8.
The Hoppers did not go easily. With one out, they put two on with back to back singles in the 8th inning but did not score. With one out in the 9th inning, they walked and doubled two more runners on base before back-to-back strikeouts by Owensbor reliever Brady Austin secured the home win.
