The Madisonville Pirates defeated the Marion Bobcats, 3-2
Dillon Endecott provided a gritty performance as starter, and relievers Michael Purcell and Michael Edwards gave Tradewater superb performances in middle and closing roles, to edge out the Marion Bobcats by the count of 3-2 in the 2012 opener for both teams, at Elmer Kelley Stadium, Madisonville. The victory marked the triumphant return of Steve Fowler as Pirate head coach, and gave the home fans a night to remember, in a slugfest of two intense rivals. Ty Broady struck a big blow for Tradewater with a hit to put the Pirates ahead for good, and Trevor Haggard became the holder of several 2012 records, for first hit of the season, and first run scored. Haggard also displayed his impressive speed on several occasions. The defense was spectacular for Tradewater, with the highlight of the evening coming from Buddy Elgin at second base, who made a thrilling play to end a Bobcat rally. Edwards ended the Bobcat 9th by striking out the final batter. Dillon Endecott received excellent middle inning support from lefty Michael Purcell. Pirate defense was stellar throughout the game. The Bobcats tied the game twice, but could not get over the final hump, as Edwards blocked the Marion invasion force in the 9th......Outfielders Leverett, Haggard and Busekrus covered turf like a blanket covers a baby, and the infield made quick work of all potential disasters. Justin Riddle provided field general suppport all night from his backstop position.
