The Owensboro Oilers defeated the Madisonville Pirates, 8-4
The Owensboro Oilers won Thursday night game in Owensboro with the Tradewater Pirates from Madisonville. The final score was 8 to 4.
The Oilers scored first with five runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Tyler Tichenor led off for the Oilers with a single, then stole second base. He moved to third base on a groundout. Austin Edge, Dalton West walked back-to back to load the bases, then Matt Johnson RBI walked and Tichenor scored. John Saylor reached on an error, and advanced to second base on a separate error. Edge and West came around in the process and Johnson moved to third base. Colin Buckner followed with an RBI single to plate Johnson and move Saylor over. Saylor scored as the fifth Oiler run on an RBI groundout by Brandon Morris. A strikeout ended the productive home at-bat 5-0 in favor of the Oilers.
It remained a five run gap until the Pirates scored one run in the top of the 5th inning. Justin Riddle led off with a walk. One out later he moved to third base on a double by Blake Massey. Riddle came in as Buddy Elgin reached on an error with two outs. Madisonville added two more runs in the top of the 6th inning. Ty Broady and Cole Fergus started off with back-to-back singles. Both scored on a RBI double by Cody Hyden. The Pirates had cut the lead to 5-3 for the the Oilers.
Owensboro got one of those runs back in the bottom of the 6th inning. With two away, Morris singled. Matt Cissell followed by reaching on an error and moved to third base on a separate error that allowed Morris to score. The Pirates trimmed the lead back to two with a run in the top of the 7th inning. Massey led off that frame with a walk, and was sacrifice bunted over to second base. A groundout later, Massey scored on a RBI double by Trevor Haggard.
The Oilers lead was 6 to 4 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning. Owensboro added two insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th inning. Saylor led off with a walk, and was sacrifice bunted to second base. Morris singled. A strikeout later, Tichenor and Mathews both RBI singled consecutively to drive in Saylor and Morris respectively. That made the score 8 to 4 for the Oilers, and that was the ballgame.
Oilers starter Mason Morris pitched a quality start for the win, getting effective relief from Jonathan Brinez and Tim Johnson. Pirate starter Kooper Kessler took the loss.
