(From Owensboro) The Owensboro Oilers were overcome at home by the visiting Marion Bobcats in the Friday night game at Owensboro. The final score was 5 to 4.
The Oilers scored first with two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Leadoff hitter Tyler Grogg walked and Brandon Morris was hit by a pitch. Grogg scored on an RBI single by Matt Johnson. One out later, Morris came in on an RBI single Jordan Rhodes. Leading 2-0, Owensboro increased the margin with two more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. With one out, Grogg was hit by a pitch. He stole both second base and third base, then scored on an RBI single by Morris. Matt Johnson and Tyler Tichenor followed with consecutive singles to load the bases. A RBI groundout by Rhodes plated Morris for the second run of the frame. At the end of the 5th inning the Oilers led 4-0.
The Bobcats got back into the game with two runs in the top of the 6th inning. Brandon Ollet reached on an error to lead off and took second base on a wild pitch. Greg Liming followed with a walk. An out later, Derek Hannahs RBI singled to score Ollet. Dave Murphy followed with a RBI double that brought Liming in too. The score was 4-2 for Owensboro until Marion added one run in the top of the 8th inning. Liming led off with a single. Clint Ambrosch singled behind him. Hannahs reached on a fielder's choice used to force Ambrosch out at second base, but Liming took third base in the process. Murphy also reached on a fielder's choice that forced Hannahs, but batted in Liming for the run.
The Oilers still hoped to hold a 4-3 lead through to the win, but the Bobcats scored two runs in the top of the 9th to take the lead. Jake Pewitt led off with a single, but after the following batter Tyler Bernard popped out, Pewitt was caught trying to steal second base and became out number two. Tyler Bonaventure placed a shallow single into right field. The next batter was Ollett, who blasted a 2-RBI home run over the left field wall to put the Bobcats up 5 to 4. In the bottom of the 9th it looked like the leadoff hitter for the Oilers might beat out an infield hit, but his foot caught and he fell mid-way between home and first base, becoming the first of the three outs that Marion needed. It was that kind of night for the home team.
Bobcats starter Darren Travers went the complete game for the win. The loss fell on Oilers reliever Thomas White.
