The Owensboro Oilers defeated the Madisonville Pirates, 6-1

(From Owensboro) The weather gave the Owensboro Oilers a chance to return to home play on Sunday night, hosting the Tradewater Pirates from Madisonville. The Oilers won by the final score of 6 to 1.
     Owensboro scored first with two runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. John Saylor led off the home half with a single and stole second base before Matt Cissell walked behind him to bring up Tyler Tichenor. Tichenor RBI singled to score Saylor. Tichenor stole second base successfully, but Cissell was caught breaking away from third base for one out. Tyler Grogg sacrifice bunted the runner to third base. Tichenor came in on a clutch two-out RBI single by Taylor Mathews.
     The Pirates narrowed the score to 2-1 with their run in the top of the 4th inning. Joe Black was hit by pitch leading off. Ty Broady sacrificed Black on to second base. The runner claimed third base on a wild pitch. Black scored on a RBI sacrifice fly  by Trevor Haggard.
     The Oilers tacked an insurance run back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th inning. Malduino Gonzalez led off with a single. Dalton West followed with a double, setting up the second-and-third base situation. Saylor returned to the plate and lifted a RBI sacrifice fly to drive in Gonzalez to account for the scoring. At the end of six innings the score was a close 3-1 in favor of the home team.
     Owensboro pulled away with three runs in the bottom of the 8th inning. Gonzalez led off the at-bat with a walk, then gave way to pinch-runner Zack Willoughby. The runner was sacrificed over to second base. A fly out later, Cissell RBI singled to plate Willoughby. Tichenor was hit by a pitch. Grogg reached safely on a bunt single. The bases were loaded with two outs. Mathews followed with another two-out hit, this time a 2-RBI single that scored Cissell and Tichenor. The timely knock gave Mathews three RBIs for the game, and pushed the Oilers lead to 6-1 after eight innings.
     The Oilers starter Tim Johnson got three outs from the four batters he faced in the top of the 9th inning to complete his winning performance. He went the distance by yielding only three hits, surrendering the one run, while striking out nine against two walks. The defensive support behind him was among the most solid of  the season for Owensboro. Pirates starter Michael Edwards took the loss.
