The Marion Bobcats defeated the Owensboro Oilers, 6-5
The Bobcats advance to Round 2 in the Playoffs hanging on to beat the Oilers in the Round 1 single game elimination in Marion.
The Oilers took an early 1-0 lead in the first innings as Tyler Tichenor reached base on an error and advanced to 2nd base on a throw. Christian McHatton singled with 2 outs to drive Tichenor across home plate. The Bobcats got going in the third scoring 4 runs. Cole Prejean was put aboard hit by pitch, Derek Hannahs singled and Tyler Bonaventure walked to load the bases. Tyler Bernard stepped to the plate with one out and hit a base clearing double for 3 RBI. Bernard advanced to 3rd base on error and scored off a Clint Ambrosch sacrifice fly.
The Bobcats extended their lead in the fourth inning. Cole Prejean singled and moved to 3rd base following a Derek Hannahs walk and a wild pitch. Tyler Bonaventure drove Prejean in with sacrifice fly and Hannahs, who had made it the 3rd base, scored a second run off a Tyler Bernard single. Marion now had a 6-1 lead on the Oilers.
Owensboro mounded a comeback in the 5th inning. Matt Cissell led off with a double and finally scored off a sacrifice by Matt Johnson. The Oilers added another run in the 6th after Zack Willoughby reached being hit by pitch and scored running in front of a Matt Cissel double.
Trailing 6-3, the Oilers drew to within one run in the 8th inning. Malduino Gonzalez walked and made it all the way home from three wild pitches. Zack Willoughby also walked and got to 3rd on wild pitches, then scored from a Taylor Mathew RBI single to complete the final 6-5 score.
Starter David Roper gets the win pitching 7 2/3 innings striking out and walking 6 batters each. Roper allowed 7 hits and was marked for 5 runs (4 earned). Caleb Luttrell picked up a playoff save going 1 1/3 innings with no hits or runs, two strikeouts and one walk. Shane Weedman takes the loss throwing 4 innings giving up 5 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), 4 walks and a couple of strikeouts. Jay Hachmiester finished the final four innings for the Oilers throwing hitless ball with 2 walks and strikeouts each.
The Bobcats advance in the Playoffs to Round 2 in a best of three series against # 1 seeded Hoptown Hoppers. The first game of the series is Wednesday night in Marion. The # 3 Tradewater Pirates take on the # 2 Fulton Railroaders in Madisonville on Wednesday to begin their best of three series.
