The Dubois County Bombers defeated the Hoptown Hoppers, 7-6
(From Hopkinsville) Dubois County and Hoptown broke out the bats early and late, scoring nine total runs in the first three innings and Dubois County scoring the tying and winning runs in the ninth as the Bombers won on the road 7-6.
Dubois County (8-7) got on the scoreboard first when Eric McKibbon reached on a fielder's choice, then scored on a two-out, two-run home run by Chris Tavares. Shane Showers then hit a single, stole second and scored on a single by Andre Davis to give the Bombers an early 3-0 lead.
The Hoppers (9-6) responded in the bottom half of the inning when Matt McGowan led off with a walk and advanced on a single by Brandon Powell. Brad Sevenish then stepped up and popped a three-run home run to tie the game at 3-3/
Dubois County retook the lead in the second inning when Jarret Young led off with a walk, went to second on a groundout, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Casey Ryan and scored on a fielder's choice, putting McKibbon on first. McKibbon went to third on a single by Bo Ausmus and scored on a single by Tavares, giving the Bombers a 5-3 lead.
Hoptown tacked on another run in the bottom of the third when Seth Larue hit a one-out single, then went to second on a single by Zac Carter. Both runners did a double-steal, but Larue was caught between second and third, finally reaching third but oversliding the base. He was able to get back safely, avoiding the tag, then scored on a sac fly by Brandon Boggetto, cutting the Bombers' lead to 5-4.
Both pitchers settled in at that point, with the Hoppers' Cole Isom retiring eight straight batters from the third through the fifth inning, starting with four straight strikeouts. Not to be outdone, Bombers starter Spencer Sapp retired eight of nine batters in the third through fifth innings.
The Hoppers took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Boggetto reached on an error and stole second. Drew Allen singled him to third, chasing Sapp and bringing in Jonathan Williams, and Derek Ferch singled him home to tie the score at 5-5. Geordie Carlson reached on a failed fielder's choice to load the bases and McGowan was hit by a pitch to score Allen and give Hoptown a 6-5 lead.
Dubois County retook the lead in the top of the ninth when McKibbon led off with a single then went to second on a single by Ausmus. A sac bunt by Tavares moved the runners up a base, and McKibbon scored the tying run on a sac fly by Shain Showers, moving Ausmus to third. Ausmus scored on a fielding error, giving the Bombers a 7-6 lead.
Bombers reliever retired the side in the bottom of the ninth for the save.
Dubois County was led by Andre Davis, who went 3-for-5 with a double and a run batted in. Ausmus, Tavares and Showers each had two hits, with Tavares getting a home run. McKibbon scored three runs for the Bombers, and Tavares had three RBIs.
The Hoppers were paced by Ferch, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Carlson got a double for the Hoppers, and Sevenish had three RBIs with a home run.
On the mound, Williams got the win, allowing no runs on two hits, striking out three and walking one in three innings. Clint Chestnut got the save, retiring the three batters he faced. Sapp started the game, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits, striking out four and walking one in five innings.
For Hoptown, Kyle Barbee took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits, striking out two and walking none in four innings. Cole Isom started for the Hoppers, allowing five runs on nine hits, striking out four and walking one in five innings.
