The Hoptown Hoppers defeated the Madisonville Pirates, 5-4
(From Hopkinsville) The Hoptown Hoppers gave up two unearned runs on two errors in the top of the first inning, but won on a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth to win 5-4 over visiting Madisonville.
Madisonville got on the scoreboard first with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning. Dathan Prewett led off with a single, went to second when Ty Broady reached on an error and scored on a throwing error, moving Broady to third. Broady scored on a groundout to give the Pirates an early 2-0 lead.
Hoptown scored in the bottom of the third inning when Derek Ferch led off with a broken-bat double down the left-field line, went to third on a bunt single by Matt McGowan and scored on a single by Trevor Lowe to cut the Madisonville lead to 2-1.
The Pirates expanded their lead when C.J. Schildt II led off the seventh inning with a solo home run over the right-field wall. Prewett then popped a two-out solo shot over the left-field wall to push the Madisonville lead to 4-1.
The Hoppers mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning when Brandon Powell led off with a single to right and took second on a fielding error. After Mitch Huckabay and Henry Roland walked to load the bases, Powell scored on a wild pitch. Brandon Boggetto then hit a single to right-center field to score Huckabay and Clayton Evans, who went in to run for Henry Rowland, tying the game at 4-4.
The Hoppers pushed ahead the winning run when Drew Allen led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a groundout and scored on a single by Powell to deep center field.
Hoptown was led at the plate by Trevor Lowe, Brandon Powell and Brandon Boggetto, who had two hits apiece. Powell went 2-for-2 with a run and a run batted in, and Boggetto drove in two runs. John Beary and Derek Ferch each doubled for the Hoppers.
Madisonville was paced by Dathan Prewett, who went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and an RBI, and Gooch Greer, who went 2-for-3. C.J. Schildt II also had a home run for the Pirates.
On the mound, Ryne Long got the win in relief, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out four and walking none in 2 1/3 innings. Justin Hageman started for the Hoppers, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits, striking out nine and walking one in 6 2/3 innings.
For the Pirates, Trent Benningfield took the loss, allowing one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning in the ninth. Aaron Mason started for Madisonville, allowing one run on eight hits, striking out one and walking two in six innings of work. Kyle DeMeo came on in the seventh, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits, striking out three and walking two in two innings.
