Madisonville got the scoring started in the bottom of the first and took a 2-0 lead. Lead-off batter Alfredo Bohorquez got plunked with the first pitch of the game from Oiler starter Brent Elder, and Elder promptly walked the second batter, Ty Broady, on four pitches. After Garret Emling bunted for a base hit to load the bases with nobody out, Matt Sheneman drove in Bohorquez with a sacrifice fly to right field. Joe Tipton followed with a single, driving in Broady.
Owensboro answered with one run in the top of the third. Brendan Reid led off the inning with a single, and Tyler Tichenor followed by reaching on a fielding error by Pirate starter Trent Benningfield. After a sacrifice bunt by Cameron Wallace advanced the runners, Dalton West doubled off the left field wall to drive in Reid.
The Pirates bounced back with three runs in the bottom of third. Sheneman got the action started with a one-out walk. Tipton then singled, advancing Sheneman to second. Robert Veltre laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit to load the bases. Sheneman scored on a throwing error by Oiler catcher Dalton West, who tried to pick off Veltre from first base. After Gooch Greer walked, Jeremy Hyde hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Tipton. Austin Shives followed with a single to left, driving in Veltre. Bohorquez hit a fly ball to right to end the inning.
Benningfield picked up the win for the Pirates, going five complete innings and allowing one run on six hits. The Pirate starter walked two and fanned one. Elder got the loss, pitching five complete innings and giving up five runs on nine hits, with three walks and two Ks.
Madisonville stays alone in third place with a 23-19 record on the season, while the loss drops Owensboro to 19-23. The Pirates travel to Marion to face the Bobcats on Sunday, and Owensboro will host the Fulton Railroaders.
