The Hoptown Hoppers defeated the Dubois County Bombers, 5-4
(From Hopkinsville) Dubois County gave undefeated Hoptown a scare on Friday the 13th with a 3-0 lead after four innings, but the homestanding Hoppers scored four runs in the fifth inning and the winning run in the sixth for the 5-4 final.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Hoptown scored four runs when Mitchell Gallagher led off and was hit by a pitch and Anthony Gonzalez walked. Both runners advanced on a double-steal and scored when newcomer Bubba Olivera reached on an error. Chris Carrier then singled, and Olivera scored when Ben Fisher doubled to tie the game at 3-3. Carrier scored on a Taylor Ellis groundout to put the Hoppers ahead 4-3.
The Bombers tied the game in the top of the sixth when Mark Giesler led off with a single, went to second on a sac bunt by Nicholas Barriento and scored when Mitch Doucette reached on an error to tie the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, Hoptown's Gallagher reached on a three-base error and scored on a fielder's choice to give the Hoppers the 5-4 win.
Geordie Carlson (2-0) got the win in relief, allowing one unearned run on one hit, striking out three and walking two in 3 2/3 innings. Ryan Mossman started on the mound for Hoptown, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits, striking out one and walking two in 3 1/3 innings. Josh Drake came on in the eighth inning, allowing no hits in an inning of work, and Trevor Blocker got his first save of the season, allowing one hit and striking out one in one inning.
Brian Wichman (0-2) got the loss in relief, allowing one unearned run on no hits, striking out two and walking one in three innings. Tyler Nichols started for the Bombers, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits, striking out two and walking two in 4 1/3 innings. Aaron Pearcy closed out the fifth inning, allowing no runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
At the plate, Fisher went 2-for-4 for the Hoppers with two doubles. Gallagher scored twice for Hoptown, and Taylor Ellis had a double.
For Dubois County, Giesler went 3-for-4 with a run and a run batted in.
