The Dubois County Bombers defeated the Hoptown Hoppers, 5-2
(From Dubois County) It had the makings of "Out of the frying pan and into the fire". Fresh off of a 13-1 drubbing at the hands of cellar dweller Madisonville, the Bombers returned home only to find the league-leading Hopkinsville Hoppers waiting for them.
But the Bombers were up to the task, defeating the Hoppers on a muggy summer night 5-2. It was only the second loss of the season for the Hoppers in 15 games.
Nick Gobert reached second base in the fourth inning on a two-base error by hopper right fielder Chris Carrier. Joe Sturino singled him in, giving Dubois County an early 1-0 lead.
The Bombers added four runs in the fifth inning. Joe Redburn led off with a single. Two outs later, Gobert was hit with a pitch. Dane Giesler and Joe Sturino followed with RBI singles. Mark Giesler brought them both home with a double to chase Hoppers starter Ryan Mossman.
Meanwhile, Lucas Barnett was cruising through the Hopper batting order with little trouble. Barnett limited the hoppers to five hits in eight innings of work, never allowing a runner past second base.
With a 5-0 lead, Barnett was given an opportunity to finish the job when he was sent to the mound in the ninth inning. He walked the leadoff batter. It was only the second base on balls he had issued in the entire game.
Jacob Murray was brought out of the bullpen to finish the task. After getting Chris Carrier to fly out, Murray walked Ben Fisher and gave up a run-scoring double to Scottie Adkins. Another run scored on Jeff Kammer's groundout, but Murray struck out Ben Rodriguez to end the game.
Barnett picks up the win. His record improves to 2-1. Mossman takes the loss for the Hoppers. His record evens at 1-1.
Dubois County is now 7-9, and moves back into a tie for third place with Fulton. A crowd of 911 witnessed the Bombers secure their fifth straight home victory in historic League Stadium.
At 13-2, the Hoppers continue to lead the Ohio Valley League.
