The Dubois County Bombers defeated the Hoptown Hoppers, 15-3
(From Hopkinsville) The Dubois County Bombers scored three runs in the first inning, two in the fourth, five in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the eighth on their way to a 15-3 rout over the homestanding Hoptown Hoppers on Sunday.
Plagued with five errors in the game, the Hoppers (7-14) ceded nine unearned runs in the game.
The Bombers (15-8) got things going in the top of the first inning when Daniel Johnson led off with a walk, went to third when Morgan DePew reached on a two-base error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Gobert. DePew took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Mark Giesler double. Giesler stole third and scored on a groundout to give Dubois County an early 3-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Jacob Snodgrass led off with a double, went to third on a sacrifice by Cody Krumlauf and scored on an Alex Mueller single. Krumlauf went to third on a sac bunt and scored on a fielder's choice to push the Bombers' lead to 5-0.
In the fifth inning, Giesler reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on an error. He stole third and scored on a bunt single by Snodgrass. Krumlauf then walked, and Newberry reached on a bunt single, scoring Snodgrass. Nick Barrientos reached on an error, scoring Krumlauf, and Johnson doubled in Newberry and Barrientos, giving Dubois County a 10-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, Giesler reached on an error and Snodgrass doubled him to third. Krumlauf then popped a three-run home run, putting the Bombers ahead 13-0.
In the eighth inning, Krumlauf reached on an error and Mueller doubled him to third. Devyn Newberry singled in Krumlauf and Mueller scored on a fielder's choice to give Dubois County a 15-0 lead.
Hoptown broke up the shutout in the bottom of the eighth when John Davis drew a one-out walk, went to second on a groundout and scored on a double by Matt Crowder to make the score 15-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Hubbuch and Mitch Gallagher reached on errors, Matt Dunlevy walked and newcomer Matt Cogen walked in Hubbuch before Will Olson singled in Gallagher to cap the scoring at 15-3.
Dubois County was led at the plate by Snodgrass, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and a run batted in; Johnson, who went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and an RBI; and Newberry, who went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Mueller went 2-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI. Krumlauf had his first home run of the season with four runs and three RBIs, and Giesler had a double, three runs and an RBI.
Hoptown was paced by Matt Crowder, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run, and John Davis had a double for the Hoppers.
Jay Prior (2-0) got the win for the Bombers, allowing four hits, striking out two and walking one in six innings of work. Willie Poe pitched the seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out one, and Hunter Spencer pitched the eighth inning, allowing one run on one hit, striking out one and walking one. Derek Flaugher pitched the ninth, allowing two unearned runs on one hit, striking out one and walking two.
Will Bishop (1-1) took the loss for Hoptown, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out one and walking two in four innings. Dylan Givens came on in the fifth, allowing eight runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out two and walking three in two innings. Parker Cash pitched the seventh inning, striking out the side, and Bo Coolen pitched the eighth, allowing two unearned runs on two hits and striking out one. Jordan Martin pitched the ninth inning, striking out one.
