The Dubois County Bombers defeat the Owensboro Oilers, 5-0
(From Dubois County) The Dubois County Bombers opened defense of their 2015 OVL title with a convincing 5-0 triumph over the visiting Owensboro Oilers. 1455 faithful Bomber fans packed Huntingburg's historic League Stadium to witness the season opener for both teams.
Dubois County starting pitcher Renton Poole set the tone for the evening by striking out for of the first five Oiler hitters he faced. Poole only allowed two hits before departing the game with two outs in the sixth inning. He had notched seven strikeouts against only three walks.
Poole's outstanding season debut was followed by a trio of Bomber relievers who joined in the shutout effort. Matt Munden, Fabian Reyes, and Raunel Perez held the visitors hitless over the final 3 1/3 innings to preserve the 2-hit shutout.
The Bomber offense was aided by consistent wildness on the part of the Oilers hurlers. Owensboro starting pitcher Austin Morgan walked the bases loaded in the first inning. He escaped the jam, only allowing a single run – a sacrifice fly off the bat of Zach Gray (Olney Central).
However, Morgan walked another pair of hitters in the third inning. Both ultimately came around to score on an RBI single by Trey Fulton and a bases-loaded groundout by Mark Geisler.
The 3-0 advantage held until the eighth when the Bombers added a pair of insurance runs. Geisler led off the inning lashing a double to the gap in right center. His Dayton Flyer teammate, Connor Echols, brought him around with a line drive single down the right-field line. The control woes resurfaced at that point for the Oiler pitching corps. A pair of walks and a wild pitch moved Echols around the bases for the fifth and final Bomber tally.
Echols was 3-for-4 on the night including a bunt single. Fulton was 2-for-3. Geisler's double was the only extra-base hit of the contest.
Poole was the winning pitcher (1 – 0); Morgan took the loss (0 – 1).
