The Hoptown Hoppers defeat the Owensboro Oilers, 5-2
(From Owensboro) The Owensboro Oilers rallied in the 9th inning for the second consecutive home game, but again fall short in a Saturday night loss to the visiting Hopkinsville Hoppers. The game never felt as close as the final 5 to 2 score made it.
The Hoppers did all their damage in just two innings. In the top of the 3rd inning Hopkinsville took a 2 to 0 lead. Kyle O' Keefe led off with a single, and was sacrificed over to second base. Malik Stephens walked and Allonte Wingate singled to load the bases. Both O'Keefe and Wingate scored on a 2-RBI single by Chase Schmittou. The score remained 2 to 0 until the Hoppers added three runs in the top of the 7th inning. Stephens was hit by a pitch leading off, a single and a double play later saw the lead runner on third with two out. Escape was not to be, as Stephens scored on a RBI single by Matt Crowder. Andrew Gross followed with a single. Hunter Holland brought both Crowder and Gross across with a 2-BI double.
Going into the bottom of the 9th inning the Oilers trailed 5-0, and had managed only one hit off of dominant Hopkinsville starter Seth Oliver. Hoppers reliever Jacob Stevens came in to alleviate the pitch count. With one out, Nick Lugo doubled and Sam Medina walked. Both runners moved up on a ground out. Pinch-hitter Hector Marmal walked. to load the bases. Stevens yielded to reliever Nick Coffman. Ben Haefner nubbed an excuse-me RBI single just past the pitcher to the middle of the infield grass, scoring Lugo. Bryce Windham followed with an RBI walk to plate Medina. The Owensboro rally went no further as a pop up to the catcher ended the game 5 to 2 in favor of the Hoppers.
The winning pitcher was Oliver, He was a shut-out starter over 8 innings pitched.Nick Coffman gets credit for a save. The losing pitcher was Owensboro starter Aaryn Chandler, though he and his relievers kept their team within reach for as long as possible.
