The Hoptown Hoppers defeat the Paducah Chiefs, 2-1
(From Hopkinsville) The Hoptown Hoppers (24-5) faced off with the visiting Paducah Chiefs (10-21) for what would turn out to be a pitcher's duel between Chase Maddux (4-1) for the Hoppers and Noah Pierce (0-7) for the Chiefs. The Hoppers would come out on top with a 2-1 victory. Maddux pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up 1 run on 7 hits earning the win. Pierce pitched 7 innings, giving up both runs on 9 hits and getting tagged for the loss.
The Chiefs' lone run came in the top of the 2nd inning when Paducah put a runner on base with a one out single by Jason Priest who was advanced to 3rd with a double by Cole Womack. Priest would go on to score on a ground out RBI by Reid Pope.
The Chiefs lead the game 1-0 until the bottom of the 6th inning. Chris Smutny was put on first base when he was hit by a pitch. Smutny advanced to 3rd on a hard hit double by Andrew Gross to left center field. Grant Robbins got an RBI with an infield single driving in Smutny. Robbins would then score what would be the game winning run on a deep sacrifice fly to center field by Chase Schmittou.
The Hoppers bullpen was flawless, facing only 5 batters, with Austin Hearn pitching the remainder of the 8th inning, striking out one batter. Gavin Alvarez then pitched the 9th inning striking out two batters. Alvarez earned his 6th save of the season.
The Hoppers are off until Wednesday when they host the Muhlenberg County Stallions (4-25) and Paducah is off until Thursday when they travel to Madisonville to face the 2nd place Miners.
