The Hoptown Hoppers defeat the Muhlenberg County Stallions, 8-5
(From Hoplinsville) Following the first inaugural OVL All-Star game, which saw nine Hoppers appear throughout the game, the Hoptown Hoppers (25-5) beat the visiting Muhlenberg County Stallions (4-27) 8-5.
After the first inning of play, both teams were already on the board 1-1. The Stallions scored after a one-out walk by JD Roberts who was batted in on a fielder's choice by Spencer Schultz. The Hoppers then quickly followed when Andrew Gross hit an RBI double, his 50th RBI of the season, scoring Wingate who reached on a leadoff single.
While the Stallions went scoreless in the top of the 2nd, the first four Hoppers would reach base scoring one after Wingate had a bases loaded walk. Gross would not waste any time either, hitting a grand slam (14th HR of the season, 3rd grand slam) to left center field to bring the Hoppers lead to 6-1.
In the top of the 4th, Muhlenberg County would get back on the scoreboard with three runs in an inning that saw starting pitcher Zach Denney leave after 3 1/3 innings of work. DJ Lewis would pick him up and ultimately throw 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run (zero earned). The Stallions scored after help from a 2-run HR by Daniel Schweikhart and a bases loaded hit by pitch, bringing the deficit to 6-4.
Chase Schmittou would add onto the Hoppers lead in the 5th with an RBI single. Gross followed suit with an RBI single in the 6th (6th RBI of the night) bringing the lead to 8-4.
Nick Coffman (2-0) would come in to pitch in the top of the 7th after two walks by Lewis, retiring three of the four batters he faced, striking out two. Coffman would finish the night with two innings of work, allowing no hits, one walk and three strikeouts, picking up the win. Muhlenberg County starter Andrew Wright (0-3) would pick up the loss after tossing, 1 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, six earned runs, four walks and no strikeouts.
Brad Galisatus would pick up his first save of the season retiring all three batters in the top of the ninth, striking out one.
The Hoptown Hoppers (25-5) go on the road next where they will face the Dubois County Bombers (17-12).
