The Hoptown Hoppers defeat the Owensboro Oilers, 10-9

In 11 innings. (From Hopkinsville) The Hoptown Hoppers (26-5) beat the Owensboro Oilers (18-13), 10-9 in eleven innings. The Hoppers scored 10 runs, on 11 hits and two errors. The Oilers scored nine runs, on 15 hits and one error. Neither starting pitcher would factor in the decision for their teams. Chase Maddux (5-1) picked up the win after pitching the 11th inning, retiring all three batters and striking out one. Graeme Cherry (1-1) is credited with the loss after throwing 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out one.

After a scoreless 1st inning by both teams the bats began to heat up. Grant Robbins would hit a solo line drive homerun on the second pitch of the bottom half of the 2nd inning to give the Hoppers the early lead. The Oilers would respond in the top of the 3rd with a run of their own after Sam Medina hit a one-out double, then was batted in on a two-out single by Joe Silva. Matt Crowder would put the Hoppers on the board again with a two-run homerun to left field, scoring Wingate who singled to lead off the bottom of the 3rd.

Both teams would strike for two runs in the 4th inning, ultimately giving the Hoppers a 5-3 lead. Hector Marmol would lead off the top of the inning with a walk that would come in to score on a Caleb Spears RBI single. Seth Woodard would also score for the Oilers after a two-out RBI single by Sam Medina. Malik Stephens would hit into a RBI fielder's choice that would score Wendall Champion who reached on a leadoff single in the bottom half of the inning. Robbins would add the second run with a bases loaded walk, scoring Stephens. 

Following a scoreless 5th inning, the Hoppers would add a run in the bottom of the 6th with a sacrifice fly to right field by Hunter Holland, scoring Matt Crowder who reached on a leadoff walk, bringing the score to 6-3.

The Oilers would tie the game up in the top of the 7th after bringing eight batters to the plate, with three runs scoring on three hits, a walk and an error. The Hoppers would go scoreless in the bottom of the 7th, with the score at 6-6.

Both teams would again strike for two runs, this time in the 8th, capitalizing on free bases. Owensboro got on the board again in the top of 8th after a walk and a hit by pitch were driven in by a 2-RBI single by Marmol giving the Oilers an 8-6 lead. The Hoppers responded by scoring twice with two singles, a walk, a hit by pitch and a sac fly by Matt Dudas that would tie the game, 8-8.

Owensboro bounced back again in the top of the 9th with Caleb Spears scoring on a two-out wild pitch, following two singles and a sacrifice bunt. Hoptown answers back with a sacrifice fly by Chase Schmittou scoring pinch runner DJ Lewis to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

Both teams were retired in order in the 10th inning with the Oilers going 1-2-3 in the top of the 11th as well. With one out in the bottom of the 11th, DJ Lewis crushed a double to the left field wall. Two pitches later he advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Andrew Gross would ultimately hit the walk off single to left field to score Lewis from third to win the game.

The Hoptown Hoppers (26-5) host the Paducah Chiefs (11-22) Saturday night at 7:05 pm at Christian County's Colonel Field.
