The Dubois County Bombers defeat the Fulton Railroaders, 16-3

(From Dubois County) Due to heavy intervention by Mother Nature in recent weeks, the latter part of the OVL season has turned into a battle of attrition for much of the league's pitching staffs. Having played seven games in five days, and faced with another double header today, the Fulton Railroaders' mound corps was working quite short-handed when they rolled into Dubois County last night.

The Bombers relief staff has been similarly overworked following seven games in the prior four days. Little relief was in sight (see what we did there?) with no scheduled days off until Friday.

The key for the evening was going to be who could get to the opponent's bullpen first. Dubois County answered the bell early and often, scoring three times in the second inning and adding four more in the fourth to KO Fulton starter Hunter Smith. The Bombers went on to score in every inning for the rest of the game, cruising to a 16-3 triumph.

For the Bombers, Kyle Matter stepped out of the bullpen for just his second start of the season, and turned in a solid five innings to stake his squad to an 11-2 lead before turning it over to his bullpen mates.

Both teams used multiple position players on the mound. First Baseman Mark Giesler and outfielder Buddy Johnson both contributed a scoreless inning of relief, even though it was the first time either had pitched this season.

The Railroaders were also forced to press position players into mound service, but the Dubois County bats were too much on this night, blasting their way to a 19-hit barrage.

Matthew Poland, Ben Balgaard, and Johnson had three hits apiece. Paul Salata had a pair of singles for Fulton.

The win is Matter's first decision of the season. Smith is charged with the Fulton loss. He is now 2-4.

Fulton returns home for a double-header against Paducah tonight. The Bombers close out the three-day home stand by hosting Muhlenberg County.
